Myles is Home!

Myles was released from the hospital on Monday December 21st! He is eating and sleeping well at home and only awake for a few hours per day. He is close to 2X the size he was when he was born, now weighing over 5 and 1/2 lbs. He certainly likes snuggling with the family better than laying in the hospital crib all day. The doctors said Chase should be home this Saturday or Sunday! I will post more pics when he gets home.

Myles Sleeping.

Kyle and Carson are amazed by their baby brother, they tiptoe around the house and whisper when Myles is sleeping. We will see how long that lasts. Here is Kyle holding Myles.

Here is Myles again, sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. He wakes up about every 3 hours and lets us know when he needs something.

Here is a picture with my hand, if you compare it to the original picture with my hand when they were born, you can see how much they have grown. He is still a little bit smaller than most newborns.

Myles and Chase Identical Twin Boys

Amy and Chase, Russ and Myles on Nov 14th

As soon as we found out were having twins, we were referred to Scripps La Jolla Rady's Children's hospital for biweekly checkups. Right from the start the doctors pointed out that Chase's umbilical cord was not ideally attached and this could cause some issues with growth and development.

During the last week of October Amy and the twins were being monitored every 48 hours and on November 2nd the doctors decided Chase was in danger and needed to come out now. Amy was not due until December 22nd so the babies would arrive 7 weeks early.

Myles and Chase were born on November 2nd 2009. Chase arrived first at 6:51 PM weighing 2 lbs., 10 oz. Next came Myles at 6:53 PM weighing 3 lbs. 5 oz. They are two weeks old on Monday November 16th. What a busy two weeks it has been.

When they were delivered Amy and Russ got to see them briefly and then they were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They put in IV's to feed them, ventilators to help them breathe and sensors to monitor thier health.

A couple of days later, the ventilators came off and were replaced a less obtrusive device. That device would still provide some breathing support and oxygen. They are also sleeping almost 24/7. They open their eyes a little bit, but the lights and heat lamp bother them so they quickly closed their eyes.

Chase on November 5th, he is not as big or plump as his brother but he is growing

Dad was bragging they have his darker curly hair, but it is getting lighter and straighter, so we will see.

Being premature, they have more jaundice, so they received light treatments once per day for the first week.

After they stabilized, the were moved to an incubator where it is quieter, darker (blanket on top) and more of a cozy regulated temperature. They are stable enough now that we take them out of the incubator and hold them when we visit. We were not able to hold Chase until this past Saturday November 14th due to size limitations, must be 1250 grams which he reached Friday.

They both came off breathing support and IV by November 9th and only have a feeding tube in their nose and some monitoring devices for vitals.

Now that the lights are dimmer and they are not poked and prodded as much, they are starting to spend an hour or so per day awake.
